AU Expansion Joint
Universal Expansion Joints
Universal expansion joints are specialized assemblies designed to accommodate combined axial, lateral, and angular movements in piping and ductwork systems, particularly where greater flexibility is required than can be achieved with single expansion joints. These joints typically consist of two bellows connected by a centre pipe, allowing for enhanced lateral displacement while maintaining robust pressure containment. The construction materials—often stainless steel or high-performance alloys are selected based on the operating environment’s temperature, pressure, and chemical exposure, ensuring durability and corrosion resistance.
Engineering considerations focus on the geometry of the bellows, the length and diameter of the centre pipe, and the integration of tie rods or control units to manage movement and prevent overextension. Universal expansion joints are frequently fitted with end connections such as flanges or weld ends to suit installation needs. Advanced designs may include internal liners to protect against particulate erosion and external covers for added mechanical protection. These joints are widely utilized in power plants, petrochemical facilities, and heavy industrial applications, providing reliable performance in complex piping layouts where multi-directional movement and vibration must be managed effectively.
AU Expansion Joint:
- Attached or linked to piping/duct flanges or directly to duct.
- Flange connections may be alignment bolted and seal welded into the duct, or provided with bolt and gasket type connections.
- Butterfly dampers typically require between 8”-12” of duct space for installation.
AU Expansion Joint Form:
- Butterfly dampers are used for duct isolation and flow control.
AU Expansion Joint Function:
- Open/close applications where less than 99.5% isolation is acceptable
- Flow control/modulation
Industrial Applications
Universal expansion joints are extensively used in a variety of industries due to their ability to handle multi-directional movement and vibration in complex piping systems. In power generation facilities, these joints are critical for accommodating thermal expansion and mechanical stresses within steam, exhaust, and cooling water lines. Petrochemical and chemical processing plants rely on universal expansion joints to maintain system integrity amid fluctuating temperatures and corrosive environments, ensuring reliable operation and reducing maintenance downtime.
Heavy industrial sectors, including steel manufacturing, mining, and pulp and paper, utilize universal expansion joints to manage lateral and angular movements in large ductwork and piping networks. Their robust construction and flexibility help prevent mechanical damage and maintain airtightness, supporting safe and efficient operation. The adaptability of universal expansion joints makes them indispensable where demanding conditions require resilient solutions for thermal and mechanical challenges.
